What is LASIK?

LASIK is a term for the popular laser refractive surgery used for correcting vision problems. Over one million LASIK procedures are performed each year in the United States. LASIK surgery is quick and painless. There is little to no discomfort after the procedure. The vision conditions that can be corrected with LASIK include astigmatism, nearsightedness, and farsightedness. Using corneal inlays, we can also reduce the need for using glasses when reading for those patients over age 40 who require glasses to read small print.  A special LASIK procedure, called Wavefront LASIK, is done with the use of computerized mapping of the eye. This is called “wavefront analysis” and provides a more precise assessment than ablations that are determined only from an eyeglasses prescription. Multiple studies have shown that wavefront-guided ablations provide sharper vision than conventional, non-wavefront LASIK and may reduce the risk of nighttime glare and halos.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

Candidates for LASIK should be at least eighteen years of age, with healthy eyes, and adequate corneal thickness. Abnormalities like chronic dry eyes or corneal diseases may disqualify you from having LASIK surgery. To find out whether you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery you should contact the office for an eye exam. Some of the questions that might be asked to determine your candidacy for LASIK might involve finding out if:

  • Your eyes are healthy
  • If your vision is stable
  • Whether you are pregnant
  • Your age and medical history

What is The LASIK procedure like?

LASIK is an elective procedure. During the procedure, the surgeon creates a thin, hinged flap of tissue on your cornea using a laser. This flap is folded back and the reshaping of your eye begins. The actual procedure takes about 15 minutes to perform on both eyes. After the LASIK treatment, the flap is repositioned and you are free to leave the surgical center on the same day.
